your secret name read-along PARTY!!!

Welcome to the Big Finale of the Your Secret Name Read-Along!! You did it, kiddo! I’m so proud of you! Lots of really, really cool God stories came out of this thing. What an honor to be a part of it all!

At the end of this post you can find out how to win some AWESOME prizes!! But first, a letter written just for YOU from Your Secret Name author, Kary Oberbrunner:

Welcome to the New World.

Before time began God knew–at this very moment–that you’d be reading this:

Your eyes have seen my unformed substance;

And in Your book were all written

The days that were ordained for me,

When as yet there was not one of them.

How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God!

How vast is the sum of them!

-Psalm 139:16-17

We’d like to applaud you. Not many people are this courageous–bold enough to explore who God created them to be. Only when we see the truth about ourselves and the truth about God, are we able to understand the purpose of our lives and the divine destiny He’s called us to.

Far too many people prefer a distant and detached God. It’s less messy this way. And because of this, there is little transformational work going on in their hearts.

God longs to engage you in a deep and personal relationship. At every turn in your life–the triumphant and the tragic ones–He’s been inviting you to lean into Him.

He desires to grant you Your Secret Name. And until you discover it, something will always feel just a little “off.” If you’re honest with yourself you probably have a myriad of emotions in addition to a number of questions. Like most humans you’ve probably been taught some lies regarding this angst–to mask it, ignore it, and stuff it–to straighten up and march in line.

God wants more.

He wants–YOU. All of you. Your past, your future, and most importantly–your present. So stop running. You’ve got nothing to prove and no one to impress.

Relax. You’re safe. He already knows what you’re thinking.

You don’t need to pretend or do anything. You only need to be. He’s been waiting for this moment for a very long time.

O LORD, You have searched me and known me.

You know when I sit down and when I rise up;

You understand my thought from afar.

And are intimately acquainted with all my ways.

-Psalm 139:1-3

I will admit I struggled getting through this book. I read it all, but I just didn’t feel like writing a lot about it. However, one thing that I did learn is that God is working on me in ways I just can’t fathom. I don’t feel that I have truly found my Secret Name, but I know I am a whole lot closer.

    Thanks for leading this Marla.

wish i could have finished out with everyone! i’m still trying to finish the book, now! hopefully as soon as my son goes to sleep … if that ever happens!!!

i’ve heard alot about ann voskamp lately … would love to read that! and starbuck’s is ALWAYS nice!

are you going to do another book study again?? i’m game! 🙂

  4. Lisa

I bought the book and read the whole thing. I can’t say that I agreed with every aspect of the book, but it did make me look deeper in the scriptures and look towards the positive names that I can have in Christ. He loves me despite my flaws and He’s got a plan for me… and I don’t have to hide behind labels. I’m not a good “post-er” of comments, but I really enjoyed those of you that posted comments and linked blog-posts. I appreciated your comments. And I have re-read many of them. Thanks Marla for leading the read-along.

I bought the book, read it, and posted about it.

God showed me that I am Secure in Him and Sought Out by Him. 🙂

I don’t have a really spectacular idea for a new book. I keep hearing things about the Next Christians by Gabe Lyons, but not sure if it’s just about youth ministry (that’s what I do for a living). I would google it right now but my computer is a little funny and I don’t want to lose this comment! 🙂

Finally, I am having a minor ethical dilemma because when I won the Narnia books I said I didn’t want any more prizes… But then you posted awesome gift cards and books, especially the two sets written by you! I am dying to read Is That All… And i just gave away Expecting to a friend who is,
    well, expecting! 🙂

All that to say, if perhaps I stumbled into winning one of those prizes, I wouldn’t send them back to you, haha. But, one entry (or no entry!) is fine with me!

Thanks so much for this read along, and all your other blogging efforts too! I so look forward to reading your posts and seeing how God is working in and through you, Marla!

This was a great read! I didn’t get to post the last couple of times but followed along. It was great to know that I don’t live in the “old name” place any more. God is good, He is enough.

Well, since I was one of the weekly winners, you don’t need to enter me for this. Just wanted to say once again that I appreciated being able to participate in this Read Along. I haven’t had time to work on commemorating all that I’ve learned but I’ll be posting about it once I do and will let you know.

Hi, Marla! I’ve been (mostly) away from the blog world for the past couple of weeks and am just catching up with everyone. I bought the book, finished the book, and posted on it a few times.

This book just didn’t do it for me. Maybe I just didn’t have the right mindset for it. I don’t know–I was disappointed in my own lack of enthusiasm, particularly when seeing how others were being blessed by it. They were seeing something I wasn’t. Maybe I just need to read it at a different stage of life. I’ll keep it around just in case!

I could go for the iTunes gift card since I already have most of the other books and the closest Starbucks is 90 minutes away!

I bought the book, read it all, but didn’t write any posts about it…I don’t blog. 🙂
I read it in about two days before the read along started. At first I thought “ehhh, this isn’t really for me”, but since you recommended it, I stuck with it and then it just hit me and I couldn’t put it down. I think the main thing I got from it was that all the names I’ve given MYSELF are not the names GOD gave me…I gave them to myself. And I am trying to let Him take them away. I didn’t really follow the read along closely but I hope that others were blessed by reading the book.

One thing God showed me through this book is that I’ve have already been living in the mindset of my secret name. I am a seeker of justice and an encourager. This book has helped me to understood what these have been in my life and what they need to become in my life.

I’d like #2 to be given to someone who will benefit from them. Again, Marla, your choice to who gets it.

  12. douglas

I’ve written a post every week, except this week (it’s coming later). I’d like #5 to be given to someone who would benefit from it. Marla, it is your decision as to who to give it to.

  13. Shelly

I also bought the book, read it in its entirety, and posted about it. One thing God has shown me through this book is that I am enough. Always feeling the misfit, and never quite enough to be used in a “real” way (whatever that meant in my mind) God graciously reached down and showed me that I fit perfectly in the plan he has for me. Enough – that’s me. Fit for his plan. How could I ever articulate, really, what this book helped me to learn? Thanks for writing doesn’t quite seem sufficient, but it’ll have to do. 😉 Thanks.

  14. Rachelle

One thing God showed me through this book is to be very careful when dealing with others. They too are on a journey to their Secret Name.

  15. Mandy

I really enjoyed this read-along and can’t wait for the next one!

I bought the book (my first ever ebook purchase).

    I read the whole thing.

I posted about it on my blog several times.

Through the book, God directed me to look back at my childhood again to gain a deeper understanding of my present struggles. He also reminded me that I am free in Christ. He taught me that I need to be honest about my struggles and submit to his work in my life so I can experience that freedom.

My vote for the next read-along is The Hole in Our Gospel, but I will be happy with most any book you would choose, Marla.

My top pics for prizes are #2 and #6.

I didn’t comment multiple times – entering me once is fair. Glad to be a part of all this!

Thanks for the book and the inspiring message, Kary!

  16. Teresa

Through the chapters that I have read God is showing me that I have a purpose and that the false names that I am accepting are leading me from that purpose. I need to follow his voice and his names for me….not the worlds names!

  17. Teresa

I did post once, although I didnt do it correctly….I did send it to Marla though. I struggle a bit with navigating around.

  18. amber koons-rowland

I have not read Katy’s book …YET, but I would definitely suggest anything by Lee Strobel or Secondhand Jesus.

    All the prizes sound good. But I think I will pick # 6, 1, 2 or 7.

  19. Dean

I finished the book! I loved the way Kary weaved together his own life story and that of Jacob and watching both of them receive their identity from God instead of sticking with the names others had given them.

One story that keeps coming back to me is that of Jesus and the demoniac. One simple line has grabbed my attention: Jesus asked HIM and THEY answered. The man was so controlled by the demons that he no longer even answered for himself. He had no name to give. I’m still figuring out who “they” are in my life, but I know we all have a “they” and I often fear and need them instead of loving them. I want to go through life answering as ME – the me who is God’s workmanship, created to be like Christ.

I didn’t receive a secret name in exactly the same way Kary writes about, but God has led me to one verse in particular and a host of related verses that all focus on the ideas of victory and triumph. I’m still prayerfully working through them.

Thanks, Marla. Thanks, Kary. (I would love to win #2 or #3, or anything else written by Kary!)

  20. sandee

One thing….I struggled with the whole secret name concept. So I really do not believe I got a secret name out of it. But, one thing I did think about, once I as done…was what lies of the enemy was I believing…and how does God see me. So I took the opposite of those enemy lies…and I know I am faithful, beautiful beloved….in God’s eyes.

    (Ann or starbucks)

And if you do a read along of Ann’s book next (just a suggestion) you should link up to her video’s on it, on BLOOM (InCourage).

  21. Mary

    And lastly…

(dang, I wish I’d finished the book…a couple chapters left to go…I will comment again before Thursday if I finish before then!)

An idea for the next read-a-long could be…The Case for Faith by Lee Strobel.

    And I’d love 7, 8, or 9! Thanks Marla!

  22. Mary

One thing God showed me through this book is that he truly cares about me and thinks I am special. He has a specific purpose for my life and how I can bring him glory.

    I’d love prize #7 (or 8!)
