apart from the gospel {enough, day 33}

At this beautiful stage of life, when all my people tend to sleep in more often than not, I can get up at 7:30 and be alone with God for a bit. I always start off by writing in my journal. Thoughts, prayers, concerns, thanks, whatever. And call it OCD (or just good documentation), I write the date and time before I start. Then if I write additional things that day, I just write the time.

This morning I wrote 7:48am, 6.03.14, Tuesday. Then nothing. Four minutes later, I wrote 7:52am and a few words. Then 7:55am, then 8:04am, 8:11am.

Hello, daydreamer/falling-back-asleeper.

I start with my journal because writing helps me focus. Well, nothing seemed to be helping today.

Then I opened Everyday Prayers (I highly recommend this book–I have it on my Kindle too which I will use when we travel. p.s. That’s an affiliate link, so if you buy it, I get a small % of the purchase price. The Kindle version is just $3.99.)

And today’s entry was good for my soul. Helping me focus, helping me pray. Maybe it will help you too. (I’ll just share part of it.)

Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love, for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go, for to you I lift up my soul. Psalm 143:8

Father… I need your unfailing love for the challenges of the day–this day.

Apart from the gospel, I’ll whine more than I’ll worship. Apart from the gospel, I’ll judge people more than I’ll seek to understand them. Apart from the gospel, I’ll get my feelings hurt quicker than being careful not to offend others. Apart from the gospel, I’ll avoid people who want more from me than I want to give them.

Apart from the gospel, I’ll react selfishly to irritants rather than responding graciously. Apart from the gospel, I’ll talk more than I’ll listen. Apart from the gospel, I’ll think about me much more than I think about you. Apart from the gospel, I won’t risk anything; I’ll do just enough to get by…

Father… I do lift up my soul to you right now. Show me the way I should go this very day. Show me what thinking, feeling, and choosing in line with the truth of the gospel requires of me, and then give me that supply… Amen.

This is a big part of why I want to purge, de-clutter, strip the unnecessary away. So I have time and space to sit at the feet of Jesus. I really, really want to hear God’s voice. You too?

p.s. Halfway through my time this a.m., my littlest (who is getting ever bigger) woke up, got herself some cereal, then sat down on the couch and started reading her Jesus Storybook Bible (another highly, highly recommended resource–our fave Bible ever). This is a good, good start to our day.

    I haven’t been having regular quiet time (er, or any!) really for over a year now. Eeks! My Pastor recently mentioned reading through Proverbs, one a day. I’ve been doing that this week and it has been so great. True, I have to get up earlier than I want to. (Even if I wasn’t doing this, I have to get up earlier than I want to because my kids are up, but I get up extra early to spend time with God). But, it’s so worth it. P.S. I started reading this post the other day, but just now finished it. I so needed to read the portion you shared from Everyday Prayers. Thanks, Marla!

    We’ve had company for the past week and I’ve gotten out of my morning routine – quiet time alone with God. If I don’t do it in the morning, I simply don’t do it. I need the time to center and focus….I’m looking forward to getting back into it now that the company has left.

    I agree with you about it being the motivation to simplify….to have time to sit at the feet of Jesus and worship. To have time to study God’s word and grow in wisdom. To prepare myself for the work He has called me to do – and to have the time to do it!

    We love the Storybook Bible too!!
