in my former life

I gifted a pregnant friend today with my last copy of Expecting. I wrapped it loosely in a piece of paper (a trick I usually reserve for this book) in case she hadn’t told everyone the news yet. (She had. Whew.) She showed another friend the book, and this woman said, “I didn’t know you were an author.”

“Yeah,” I smiled, “in my former life.”

According to the sidebar on my blog, I have 99 posts in the “writing” category. (Here’s one to read if you’re thinking of writing a book.) I got to thinking today that I don’t always talk about my books (because awkward) (and also, old news), and maybe newer reader-friends don’t know that I’ve actually written some.

So, if you know all my books (blah blah blah), catch ya later. But, if you’re interested in hearing a little bit about the stuff I’ve had published, here you go.

(There’s a prize if you make it all the way to the end. Heck, you can just scroll down there right now if you want.)

I’ll do my best to make this short & sweet.

Book 1: From Blushing Bride to Wedded Wife. Published in 2006 (almost a decade ago!). Went out of print ages ago. (Sad details here.) You can still buy it used on Amazon for $.01. And I think my mom might have 2-3 copies. This was a nice little book to cut my writing teeth on, but I’m not sad to see her go. I’ve changed sooooo much in 10 years.

Book 2: Is That All He Thinks About? Published in 2007. This one also went out of print, but it lasted 7 years, so yay! It’s still available as an e-book, so there’s that. It’s about sex. (You probably figured that out.)

Book 3: Changing the World One Diaper at a Time. Published in 2008. Also out of print. I like this book. Sometimes I think to myself, “I should read it again,” but I never do (I haven’t read any of my books since they were first published.). This one is also available as an e-book. It’s geared toward new moms, but any mom could read it. Or a not-yet-mom.

Book 4: Expecting. Published in 2009. My only traditionally-published book still in print (crosses fingers). I hope it stays in print for awhile longer, because it’s been awesome donating it to crisis pregnancy centers (and giving it to pregnant friends).

(Big gap where I tried to get another book published, but my out-of-print books worked against me. I finally gave up and started self-publishing e-books. Shattered dreams turned into different, better ones.)

E-book 1: The Husband’s Guide to Getting Lucky. Published in 2011. Inspired by emails from husbands whose wives had read ITAHTA (or who had read it themselves) and wanted a book for men. It was fun to write, and I’ve gotten lots of positive/thankful feedback.

E-book 2: Once Upon the Internet. Published in 2012. A fun story about a time our family went to 52 zoos in 52 weeks and stayed with people we’d only ever met online. WERE WE CRAZY?

E-book 3: The Wife Life. Published in 2013. This one makes me happy. Blushing Bride went out of print before Kindle books were really a thing, so it’s not available as an e-book. I got the rights back, reworked the whole thing, and it’s now a better reflection of my thoughts on marriage. And it’s funny. All my books are funny. (To me anyway.)

E-book 4: We Dream of Cambodia. Published in 2014. This is gonna be another one of those books I look back on in five years (or right now) and sigh. What did I know of Cambodia back in 2014? It’s okay though. I’ll just write more. For now, it’s a quick, easy read that gives readers a peek into why we fell in love with this place we now call home.

E-book 5: An Unschooling Manifesto. Published in 2014. An honest look at our not-so-conventional way of educating our children. It makes me happy.

So, what’s next?

Well, we’re currently doing our best to learn a new language (which feels much like a full-time job when you toss in the triple-digit temps and adjusting to a new culture), and I’m working with 3-5 people (as an editor) on their writing projects (for pay).

But, in my “free time,” I’m working on a book about life with Gabe’s anxiety. (Hoo boy, it’s a doozy.) No promises on when it will release. Hopefully before the end of the year.

Nina and Livi are also working on e-books (fiction) that will be available for purchase sometime in the next few months.

In my dream world, I would make enough money off of my books to support our family here in Cambodia. Maybe someday. For now, it’s just a pipe dream (but you buying an e-book helps!).

If you’ve made it this far and want to check out one of my e-books for yourself, email me, and I’ll send you a free PDF of the e-book of your choice.

Bonus points (i.e., warm fuzzy feelings about you in my heart): If you’ve read any of my books, which one was your favorite, and why?

i liked blushing bride so much i was surprised to learn your feelings on it! i’m certainly no betty crocker or southern baptist proverbs 31 kinda wife, but it did help me in a time of transitioning.

I LOVED Blushing Bride. It was honest and convicting and biblically based. I got married in 2006 and many of friends married within a few years. I always recommended it and lent it out a few times. I need to read your updated version 🙂

I read Changing the World One Diaper at a Time in approximately 2009. Maybe it was 2010. I read it when I was needing some serious encouragement mothering my 3 year old and my very difficult baby. I LOVED it! And I’ve been reading your blog ever since. What?! It’s 2015 already!! Blessings to you!

I never asked for the Unschooling Manifesto back when you offered it to us before….or maybe I just didn’t know how to access it because I’m clueless on computers like that. My children are feeling very insufficient and insecure right now because their friends are graduating with transcripts that contain things like “Trig” and “Free Enterprise” and “grades” on them. They need to read in print that an alternative to mainstream, college prep education is a valid and desirable option!

And I’m eagerly awaiting that anxiety one…..

I enjoyed reading this recap. 🙂 My favorite book of yours changed with my seasons! Read the wife and sex one when I got married, read the changing diapers when I started having kids, the pregnancy one during my third pregnancy, school one when trying to decide what was the next step in our family’s schooling situation. Etc. Look forward to reading more! praying for your family right now! 🙂
