james read-along: nice-to-meet-you post!

Welcome to Introductions Day for the James Read-Along! I’m so glad you’re here, and I can’t wait to meet you!! No joke! So excited!!

If I’ve caught you off guard, let me invite you to read the Book of James (in the Bible) with us over the next five weeks. Here’s how it will work:

Today, Aug. 31: introduce yourself in the comments section of this post (see instructions at end).
Sept. 1 – Sept. 6: read Chapter 1 of James, take some notes, pray, form some opinions, whatever.
Wed, Sept. 7: read my post on James 1 + others’ thoughts, link to your own blog post if you’d like.
Wed, Sept. 14: do the same for Chapter 2
Wed, Sept. 21: Chapter 3
Wed, Sept. 28: Chapter 4
Wed, Oct. 7: Chapter 5
Wed, Oct. 14: PARTY!!

Some Things You Might Be Wondering:

1. What if I “commit” to doing it and then I drop out? No worries, friend. No pressure, no condemnation, no big deal.

2. What if I don’t have a blog? Can I still participate? Absolutely. Just leave your thoughts in the comments section here. Or just think them in your head if you’d like.

3. I heard a rumor that you might be memorizing the entire book of James. What the…?? Oh, goodness. I don’t know. I thought about it, but I’m already memorizing 24 verses this year (about justice and loving the poor), and I think I’m good. If I feel God nudging me big-time in the next few days to do it, I’ll let you know.

4. What if Wednesdays aren’t good for me? You can read the posts and/or add to the discussion on any day at any time. I’ll check the comments frequently, and I’m up for continuing the James dialogue all week long.

5. How do I link to my own blog post? I’ll explain that the day before we start the Read-Along (so, Tuesday, Sept. 6).

And now, let’s get down to the business of getting to know each other a little bit!

Introducing Yourself Step-by-Step:

1. Your name and location. (be as vague or specific as you feel comfortable)

2. What’s keeping you busy these days.

3. What you’re hoping (or are afraid) God will do in your heart and life during this read-along.

Extra Credit: Invite a friend to join us!

And that’s it! Off you go! Don’t be shy! I’ll leave the first comment to get us started. (Let me know if you have any questions!)

Right now I am in High School. I am doing a swimteam dance class, and trying to learn Hungarian
I am hoping to become closer with God while on my exchange.
P.S. sorry I am a late joiner. But the good thing about blogs. you can also read later post 🙂

  7. Gina

    1. Gina – Bred, born & raised in San Antonio, Tx

    2. I’m a SAHM with 3 kiddos. 2 of them are adult age and one is in 2nd grade. My days are kept busy with marathon training, women’s bible studies, and volunteering at a pregnancy care center. My hubbers and I have been together for 16 years and we will be celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary very soon. He is a wonderful man and my best friend.

    3. I’m not sure yet what God has in store for me in this read-along. I was referred thru joyce-fromthissideofthepond.Blogspot.com and because yesterday my daily bible verse was James 1:12, it all confirmed an invitation from Father to join you.

  8. Kristen

    Hi Marla

    I’m also a late “signer-upper” 😉

    1. I’m Kristen. I live in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (incidentally, Samantha encouraged me to join in on the read-along)

    2. I am a first-time stay-at-home Mum to my beautiful and very cheeky baby boy, Kingston. I also contribute to Domestic Kingdom, and I’m excited about the way God is speaking to the hearts of so many women through it.

    3. I’ve really struggled with the transition from “career woman” to “just a housewife”, and my spiritual life has taken a beating because of this. James has always been a challenge to me – probably because of the fact that it hits so close to home. I hope to read this with fresh eyes and really trust that God will change my heart through the process. Thanks for the opportunity!

  10. Rachel

    I’m a late signer-upper. =D
    1. I’m Rachel from Palmdale, CA
    2. What’s keeping me busy these days? I’m currently teaching a kindergarten/1st grade combo. 13 kinders and 11 1st graders all day long, all me.
    3. I’m hoping that God will continue to transform me and that my love for Him will grow more deeply.

  11. valerie (in TX)

    1. Hi! I’m Valerie, and I live in scorching-hot West Texas. 🙂
    2. I stay WAY busy with a hubby, two kids (11 and 8), and a part-time job as a CPA. I truly don’t know how all you full-time-working mamas do it.
    3. Ohhh, how I am hoping (and scared) that God will open my eyes and change my heart in new ways. I went on my first mission trip this summer, and just found out I’m going back next year. I want to go with a pure and RIGHT heart, and to be sure my goal is to be the hands and feet of Christ…nothing else. I so need His work in my heart.
Can’t wait to get started! And….thank you for grace!

  13. Marla

    1. Marla (NOT Taviano!) from Oklahoma City

    2. Busy with – three kids (ages 8, 4, and 2), full-time teaching (middle school choir), and attempting to hold our home and lives together with my basketball-coaching, history-teaching husband (oooh, and been reading ITAHTA, but that’s a topic for another day!).

    3. I’ve got a new resolution this school year to get up earlier (ouch!) to have a real devotional time in the mornings, and I’m glad to have a focus for those times. It’s taken me forever to “introduce” myself, because I suspect that I will be one of those people that just thinks and never comments…but we’ll see!

    1. Marla Taviano

So glad you’re joining us, Marla! You have a really cool name. So cool that I’ll be really sad if you never comment. 🙁

And let me know when “another day” comes and you’re ready to discuss ITAHTA. 😉

  15. Krysten

    1. Hello, there! I’m Krysten, from about 30 minutes south of Columbus.
    2. My job as an elementary school teacher is keeping be busy these days, since we’re in that all-important first-few-weeks-back zone. I’m fighting hard against my workaholic tendencies, and trying to keep a balance in my life (currently failing pretty miserably on that one!) I’m also busy trying to tune out a lot of busy voices around me to hear what God has to say about the next leg in my little journey hear on earth. A lot of possibilities swirling around in this head of mine!
    3. I am hoping that this read-along will re-inspire me, as I’ve always loved the book of James. I’m praying God will give me a fresh perspective from it. I’m scared that it will probably be one of those painful re-examining times. But nonetheless, I’m inviting him to drop the plow so I can be good soil again.
Looking forward to all of your perspectives! Thanks, Marla, for opening up this invitation!

  17. Mary Hobson

My name is Mary from Davison, Michigan. I met Marla at our first annual Chocolate Luncheon @ our church. She was our speaker. She was great. Do you still have the “sanitary slippers” i made? I keep myself busy running ladies ministries at our church along with a retired husband and 8 grandkids. Life is exciting. I hope to learn how to better apply Jesus’ truths to my everyday living in a real way thru the James train. Cant wait to share.

  18. Samantha

    1. Hi! I’m Samantha, and I live in Dubai (United Arab Emirates)
    2. I’m busy looking after my adorable baby and working with friends on our brand new blog, Domestic Kingdom, which is about applying the gospel in the more mundane moments of our lives
    3. I think I’ve been running away from God during some tough stuff lately, and I know that the only way out is to turn around 🙂
Thanks for the opportunity to do this; it’s really encouraging 🙂

  19. mindy z

Mindy from bellefontaine, oh. Keeping me busy these days is school teaching, planning for an upcoming outreach in our town, and working on our house.
I am in need of more fellowship with believers and encouragement in studying the word of god and applying it to my life.

  20. Melissa

    Melissa, Columbus, Ohio
Right now we (my husband and three kids) are remodeling our farmhouse and kinda living in two places. It is starting to wear on us, and so I need to be encouraged in God’s word.

  21. Kristie

I’m in Katy, Texas. I met Marla at a MOPS meeting almost 2 years ago. I’m blessed with two boys, one is almost 3 and the other is 5 weeks. I need some accountability reading God’s word and thought I would start here.

  22. Michelle Bentham

Oh Yes… I forgot all the sign up requirements in my delirium of being able to sign up! I’m from Fort Worth(ish) TX. The Mr. and I are almost empty nesters with four kids between the ages of 18 and 22. We enjoy our little dog, Pogo, and just doing life with church, family and friends. My man and I are also dreaming big about a home on the range for Ranch Retreats where the hurting and broken will find God’s healing touch and presence. I am currently leading a small group of women through John Sheasby’s “The Birthright” and stay very busy with my current position in Freedom Ministries.

All that said, I’m up for a little Bible study. 🙂

  23. Lorena

    1. Lorena from Mocksville, NC.

    2. I’m a stay-at-home mom of a 5 year old and a 3 year old. I am attempting to homeschool the oldest in kindergarten this year. I play keys on our worship team at church and also lead a life group with my husband. I love to cook and I am always experimenting with new dishes when people come over.

    3. I love the book of James. I have been going through a huge spiritual growth spurt lately so I am looking forward to seeing what God is going to teach me through this read a long.

  24. Scott Moses

    1. Scott from Columbus, OH

    2. My wife and I are embarking on our 5th year of homeschooling our three children. (I am in the support role. She does all of the heavy lifting.) Our third child Zane has entered into the mix which adds new challenges but I wouldn’t have it any other way. We are excited about being a part of the Sanctuary Columbus church plant. We are ramping up our involvement in a Community Bible Study Group and leading a men’s bible study. I am also involved in a weekly healing ministry at our former church where we have seen God’s faithfulness demonstrated in many miraculous healings.

    3. I am hoping to find fresh revelation from the Holy Spirit as we spend time with Him in His Word that I might look a little more like Jesus in word and deed.

  25. Catherine

    Hi Marla!
Catherine from Texas, popping in (a day late) to join in.

What’s keeping me busy these days … homeschooling 3 girlies, ministry, a writing project, and just life in general … but it is a good kind of busy.

I am excited about the read along because I love reading what others are learning and enjoy the community that comes from reading and sharing together.

    Blessings,
    Catherine

  26. Krista

    1. Krista hails from a far-off land called “Westerville, Ohio”. The land lies an amazing distance from the fabulous author, Ms. Marla…at least a six minute drive, going slowly.

    2. Currently, I am a famous actress, doing mostly children’s educational programming. In my spare time, I have been studying Bio-Chemical engineering in order to make my superhero boots fly without the use of any elements that would endanger the environment. I enjoy playing NFL Football for the Denver Broncos, and recording voice overs for informercials shown only at 4 a.m. (Ok, I’m a stay at home mom)

    3. I am excited to see what God has planned through His word for me to hear. I am glad to have a planned read, as it is tough to keep on a reading schedule!

    1. Marla Taviano

Oh my word I’M SO EXCITED!!!! I love you, girl, and you could be ALL THOSE THINGS AND MORE, but your babies are just too cute to be away from for more than a minute. Love you! Let’s make the long drive and get together soon!

  27. beth lehman

Late, but I’m in…. I have been completely unsuccessful in reading through the Bible – my 11 yo is farther along than I am!!

    1. Beth – Blacksburg, Virginia

    2. three kids, part-time reading teacher, quilting/sewing, reading Harry Potter (again, a little late, eh?), keeping up with dust and dishes!

    3. love the idea of reading with others and have a group with a common goal – supporting each other.

    1. Marla Taviano

Welcome, Beth!! I’m trying to read through the Message Bible this year. I just started 1 Kings. 🙂 Might be more a 3-year plan.

I love Harry Potter. I read them late too (but not quite as late as you), and my 10yo and I are getting ready to read #1 out loud together.

      Go Hokies!!

    Kathleen

  30. Tonia

    1. Live near Columbus, OH.

    2. Busy with a 2 yr. old, 3 1/2 yr. old, starting homeschool pre-school, flylady, pinterest and blog reading keep me pretty busy. I also have a new found love/obession with fabrics and sewing things out of them.

    3. I’m just super excited about James because I’ve always wanted to do a study but haven’t found someone who was interested at the same time. We’re going through lots of testing and trials right now, so I feel like this is definitely a God thing that this study is starting right now. Can’t wait!

  31. Nikki Barber

Good evening everyone! I am so excited to join my very first blog.

    1. I’m Nikki from La Porte City, Iowa.

    2. What’s keeping me busy…Ava (my four-legged little girl), work…trying to donate plasma for extra money to pay off bills (so far I’ve been able to donate once because my iron is so low).

    3. What I hope to have God accomplish…my hopes: to have my life centered on Him, to gain quality time in His Word, to give me strength to stop spending money and pay off my bills…my fear: change…that it’s going to be difficult and not easy…

…Nothing like putting myself out there on the first blog I ever join…well I am all in! 🙂

  32. Amanda Rae

I suppose I can officially sign up for this thing 😉
    Amanda Troyan from Aurora, Ohio.
I work for a crazy almost 5 yr old and his scatter-brained but loving mama. They keep me pretty busy.
I’m concerned that the Lord will turn me inside out, but i’ll remain so focused on self that I won’t live out the changes I know I need to make.. :/

LOVE YOU! and so excited to do this with you, friend.

    1. Marla Taviano

NO WAY!! I was just going through and tallying up the people and where they’re from and this is the mental note I made to myself (AND I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP), “Text Amanda and tell her that I’m pretty sure God just told me that she needs to do this read-along.” I guess he went ahead and told you himself. That was nice of him. LOVE YOU!

  33. Mary

I’m here, I’m here! I actually just finished a bible study on the book of James this week so I’m interested to read people’s thoughts and posts.

Oh geez, I’m not following instructions.

    1. Mary, Spring TX
    2. CHILDREN
    3. Learn something new that I missed over the last few weeks of studying James. 🙂

    Thanks Marla!

    1. Marla Taviano

Oh geez, when have you EVER followed instructions?? Love you, Mary!! Sooooo glad you’re joining us!! Love you and your little boys bunches! (thought of you today as the two little guys I watched wore me out)

  34. Amy

    Amy from Fort Mill,Sc

I work full time and now keeping up with homework and laundry in the evenings. Which is why my eyes are glazing over right now.

I love the accountability of these read-alongs and just excited to see what new things God has to say!

  35. Gail

    1. I’m Gail, a born-Buckeye living in the bluegrass state.

    2. Is everything and then some a legal answer? I am wife to a hard-working pastor, mom to 3 girls (9,9, and 6), teacher of 154 9th grade English students, sister of a funny girl who necessitates daily phone calls to debrief about her day. I am working hard to be right where He needs me doing what He tells me.

    3. I need to do this read along because God says so. It’s been a long running joke with my Sunday School and Bible study groups that God must have something serious to say to us about James because, I kid you not, He keeps putting it in front of my face. Over and over and over again. Especially chapter 4. So I’m all ears, Lord. Speak to me.

  36. Jessica Cardwell

    1. Jessica from Twin Cities, MN

    2. I work full time, I’m married and have a son starting Kindergarten one week from today!

    3. James is one of my favorite books of the Bible, so I’m excited to share thoughts. 🙂

  37. Amanda

    1. Amanda from State College, PA (Home of Penn State University 🙂

    2. I stay busy as a SAHM to my (increasing strong-willed) 21 month old son and my (thankfully mellow) 2 month old son.

    3. I have such a hard time being in the Word consistently. I am so excited for the accountability and growing from the insights of others.

Thanks so much for setting this up, Marla!

  38. Kara Nutt

Hi, I’m Kara and I live in Morrisville, NY. It’s a small town southeast of Syracuse, NY in Central New York.

I have one 4-year-old son who I’m anxiously trying to get ready to start pre-school next week. I’m really looking forward to 2.5 hours of me time starting. 🙂 Maybe I can actually get back to an exercise routine.

I’ve been in a bit of a dry spell with God, so I’m hoping to reconnect and get my brain out of this fog I’ve been in.

    1. Marla Taviano

Hi, Kara! So glad you’re riding the James train with us! I prayed for you just now–that God will draw you close to him. Maybe your little sweetie being in preschool will help!

  39. Christine

I’m Christine and I live in Huntington Beach, CA. Right now busy consists of working not-quite-full-time managing a real estate development firm, getting my two precious girlies ready to start 2nd grade and kindergarten, serving on our church’s leadership team, leading worship, preparing to teach chapel at the girls’ school on Wednesdays, finding moments with my most awesome husband and trying to keep the house from devouring us whole because of everything else we have going on! 😉 Free time (hah!) finds me at the sewing machine or in the kitchen, frequently wishing for a fairy godmother to help with the dishes!

This read thru of the book of James excites me. I’m an Alpha leader at
our church this fall and studying the Bible in this way, with a new group of women, really appealed to me since I chose to use my womens study time in a different way this time around. The book of James popped up in front of me in several different places around the time Marla mentioned she was going to host this, so I jumped at the chance to look at the book in depth. Not sure where God will take me thru the course of studying it, but I’m excited to find out!

  40. Tracie

    1. My name is Tracie and I live in PA.

    2. I have been married for 23 years. My husband is in full-time ministry as an Associate Pastor. I have been a stay-at-home mom for almost 22 years. I have 7 children. I have a married 21-year-old daughter and a 3 year old grandson and a 20-year-old daughter who is in college. Those still living at home are 16 (d) , 12 (s), 10 (s), 8 (d), and 5 (d). I am planning on starting Connections Academy (a cyber school) with my 5 youngest children starting the day after Labor Day. YIKES. Am I CRAZY?!!!!? Life is about to get even crazier than it already is.

    3. Since I am now going to be doing school at home I really need a Bible study that I can do at home instead of going to a Bible study that meets during the week at someone’s home. This looks like the perfect solution for me. I have been wanting to go through the book of James. I have had David Platt’s sermon series on the book of James bookmarked for me to listen to for months but haven’t gotten around to it. Maybe now I will go through the book and make a point of listening to it, too. I look forward to it.

    1. Marla Taviano

Hi, Tracie! It’s good to have you here! I’m doing online school with our 9yo daughter this year. Four days in, and so far, so good! Ooooh!! I’m absolutely going to listen to David Platt’s James series. Thanks for the tip!

    2. I’m staying busy trying to figure out a new schedule now that both of my girls are in school. I’m also training for a marathon. Woo!

    3. I’m excited to spend time reading this book in-depth. I’m challenged to think about what faith in action might look like in our church and community.

I’m posting a link of this post on Facebook to see if there are some friends out there who’d like to read along, too… looking forward to this!

    1. Marla Taviano

Welcome, Jenn!! So many of my friends are training for marathons. I wish I could run one without getting in shape. 🙂 So glad you’re joining us–and inviting friends too!! You’re the best!

    3. Book of James is a tough one for me- that tongue stuff is hard for a lawyer like me! Our church recently went through the book and I tuned out. When this read a long popped up I realized God was going to keep putting it in front of me until I paid attention.

    1. Marla Taviano

Welcome, Cat!! I’m soooo sorry about the horrendous, never-ending heat wave you guys have had. Every time I start to think it’s hot, I think of my friends in TX.

And I love that God won’t let you get away from James. He does that to me too.

Still putting it together. I started on a blog but haven’t released it yet. I’ll let you know when I get it finished. Family photos are usually on my facebook page. I’m really enjoying the learning and improving process. It’s been a great outlet for me.

    3) I am constantly working at bringing the Lord into my life and living my life as the Lord teaches. I had never read the “entire” Bible, but have recently committed to reading it from cover to cover. I am starting with the New Testament and then the Old. I am always happy to have others to share my reading experience with. I am grateful to a dear friend of mine, Rebecca, for referring me to you!!

    3. I really like the book of James. I tried to memorize it and epically failed (that’s 7th grade talk). I’m excited to look at it with other people.

    1. Marla Taviano

Oh, wow, Melanie. Teaching math to 7th graders. You brave, brave soul. That’s what I did for my student teaching. And frankly, I prefer it to many other things (kindergarten and first grade for two). Welcome to the read-along!!

    3. Life is so crazy right now that I am really craving the accountability of reading the Word with a group, and studying it together. Our church went through the book of James a year or so ago, and I’m looking forward to a refresher!

    1. Marla Taviano

You know how much I like you, girl. And I am SO thrilled for you and Meg and this book! You DO know that’s what connected the 3 of us 3ish years ago, right? Meg ordered my Diapers book and asked me a publishing question, and the rest is history. Would love to meet you in person someday! Happy you’re here!!

  65. gini

    1. I am Gini and I live in Oxford, MS… but I’m a Georgia girl.

    2. I have taught special education in the past, but this year in effort to teach and live in my city (& not have 3 hour round trip commute) I am teaching 6th grade at a classical Christian school. It is really keeping me on my toes and I am learning a ton!

    3. I am doing a study about the tongue and our speech with a Bible study at church and so I am looking forward to really plugging into the word and spending some time in James… where he discusses many topics– one being the tongue. Maybe double duty will help me rein in my tongue under God’s control!

I have family in Ohio and enjoy following your blog Marla!

  67. Ellen R.

  68. Sharon W

    2) Being a Mom to a toddler is keeping me busy these days. I get such joy from all she’s learning and doing, but get tired too. I’m just starting up a blog. I have a private one for family and close friends, but want to share some of my posts with the general public. Hence the new blog. I’m also working on decluttering our home. Focusing on the kitchen right now.

    3) I’m both hoping and afraid that he’ll change my heart in an area that my husband and I don’t see eye to eye on.

  69. Amy

    1. Amy, currently living in Manzini, Swaziland, Africa

    2. We have 3 girls 13, 10 and 8. Homeschooling all three. Husband, Steve, and I work with Adventures in Missions and Childrens HopeChest here in Swazi serving orphans, vulnerable children and widows. Swaziland has the highest HIV per capita of any country in the world. So many orphans….the parents are dying, leaving the very old and very young. We help through Carepoints, where the children can come and get food, discipleship and be safe for most of the day. I love to read and am so very thankful for Facebook, Skype and the Internet….has made the transition to living in a foreign country so much easier!

    3. I have been reading through James for the past few months….seems like God has really been using it to get my attention. Not totally enjoyable, certainly not easy, but good. Ya know? I am really looking forward to seeing what others have to say about it. Missing the church community we had in the States and small group “feedback” aspect. Church here is just different. Can’t wait to get to “know” some of you better.

    1. Danielle

Sweet lady, I just read a couple posts on your blog and already love your heart. I have some very sweet friends who are in a very different part of Africa, loving on a very different population cross-section, and I’m convinced that God sends the sweetest hearts to Africa. Thank you so much, my sister, for leading by example in your trust in God. Can’t wait to learn more from you!

    2. Marla Taviano

Amy!! Hugs to you, friend! Your mama should have your pillow pet. 🙂 I can’t tell you how excited I am that it’s going to AFRICA. Seriously–I danced around our house for awhile over it. I love what you guys are doing in Swaziland, and I’m praying!! Keep going, girl. I know it’s so hard. You’re doing something so amazing.

      1. Lorena

        Amy,
You are doing something amazing! I have seen firsthand the love and compassion you have for the people of Swaziland. God has given you such a big heart full of unconditional love for these people. He is using you in a tremendous way to encourage the Africans but also to encourage and challenge the Americans who come to visit. Know that you are loved and prayed for.

  70. Danielle

    1. Danielle J. Albuquerque, NM

    2. Sweet husband and I are in the process of bringing our 12 yo daughter home from a country in SE Asia. I LOVE this girl, and can’t wait for her to come home so I can learn to love her better. We’re really involved in youth and college ministry at our church, and I have the honor of 2 afternoons a week to pour into teenage girls’ hearts. I’m starting up a weekly breakfast with women in the church to hopefully foster some Titus 2 action. Have also become a food allergy advocate within the last year. My job is to care for my husband, my home, and for people’s hearts, I get paid in hugs, kisses, and love, which is just the way I like it!

    3. I go through bouts of feeling like my works are not faith-based, and I don’t ever want to say that I can show you my faith BY my works. Please Lord, help me in my unbelief! Also praying that God’s word will gird my up as we wait (admittedly impatiently) for the joy of the child of my heart coming home.

    1. Marla Taviano

Be watching your mailbox, sweet mama, for a little gift for your NEW DAUGHTER (and one for you too!). Love and hugs!! So, so, so, so THRILLED about God’s plan for your family!! THRILLED!!! I knew from the minute I got your first e-mail about her that she was going to be yours. Praise Jesus!

      1. Danielle

You are so sweet. Thank you for praying so diligently for this crazy life God has called us to. Seriously, you bless me in so many ways, and all I can do is thank you and hand out washer necklaces to every girl (and some boys) I know. Hoping to make another order soon so I can keep telling people about this amazing lady I know who loves Jesus enough to get off her butt. (I mean that in the nicest, most admiringly, happiest way possible.)

  71. Alma Blinn

    1. Alma Blinn from Magna, Utah (Your friend from Utah when you came through on your zoo tour!)

    2. I work full time, helping my husband with a church plant in Magna and I have an eleven month old daughter.

    3. I am hoping for God to show me something wonderful to share with others.

    1. Marla Taviano

Alma!! I so wish we would’ve had more than 5 minutes to chat while we were at your place. It was so, so, so sweet of you to open your home to people you had no clue about. I would love to meet your beautiful little girl someday (and that little grandbaby too!). I’m so glad you’re reading along with us!

  72. Kathryn

    1. Kathy from Colonie, NY

    2. I’m a stay at home mom with 2 kiddos: Landen, 6, who goes back to school next week, 1st grade! (I think I just breathed a sigh of relief, love him to pieces, but there is NO quiet in the house right now!) Lydia, 14 months old, still nursing, doesn’t like to eat or sleep! she’s so much fun though! Trying to keep a clean house and figuring out how to bring some income in! Also trying to keep the “passion,” if you will, with the hubs….

    3. I am praying that this read-a-long will help hold me accountable. I stink at disciplining myself to read The Word and/or pray. (Just bein’ honest!) I need to find some peace and get back to serving Jesus like I want to and to be an example to my kids… and husband!

  73. nicky

    1) nicky – north of Dayton Ohio
    2) working at our family business, getting ready to start substitute teaching when needed while still looking for a full time job.

  74. Lori

    1. Lori from Columbus, Ohio

    2. I am the busiest woman you may ever meet – 4 kids who all play soccer – 6th, 3rd, 1st, Preschool. I am Head of IT for an international team and very blessed to have a job I enjoy that matches my talents and, despite the international travel, gives me the flexibility to be an active mom for my kids. My husband is our hero and a real life hero to many others as a firefighter / paramedic in a poor inner city community. I build websites and technology strategies for non-profits as a hobby, love photography, running and crossfit, traveling with our family and in between all that….I love to read.

    3. I’ve been praying for almost a year for God to “break my heart” for a specific need. He has moved away many barriers to make it possible for me to give more of myself to His purpose. It’s becoming clearer and clearer to me that I need to help the helpless, specifically women and children in impoverished areas both local and international. And that I am to be an active example of Christ to mobilize wealthy, capable suburban families to give, give, give, and help eliminate some of the injustice in our world.

One of my most difficult sins to control are the words that come out of my mouth. Hence James is a great place for me to spend time.

I’m scared to death of memorizing but totally need to do a better job there – retrain my brain!

I PRAY MOSTLY THAT I HAVE TIME TO DO THIS!!!!

I’ve tried to blog, on and off, and currently continue to debate my “why” for blogging. Maybe this will give me a reason to try again? I love Marla’s aggressive goals but forgiving and agile approach when things don’t go the way our over-achieving perfectionistic minds might plan. God’s plan, not mine! So we’ll see here if the time and purpose materialize per God’s directions to me.

Here ends my vociferous, random thoughts to get to know me 🙂

    1. Marla Taviano

You absolutely, positively BLOW MY MIND, Lori. I’m so, so amazed by all you do and do WELL. It was so fun meeting you in person for 5 seconds last week. You are SO pretty!! I’m glad you’re joining us–no worries if you can’t participate as much as you’d like. I get it!

I love the book of James. I recently challenged my son to memorize the book of James with me and well he is way farther along than I am. I am amazed at how bad I am at memorizing but I am still trying. I am a counselor and I have a few people that I meet with that have committed to memorizing it as well. This is not my gift and it is a challenge but I am excited to see what God is going to do with this.

I love James 1:27, and it’s really transformed my life purpose, and I am eager to dig into this book with you all and get to know you and hear from the Lord and be transformed by the reading of His Word together. Also, after returning from our Ukraine trip, I’m having a lot of sadness at the goodbyes, so I think it will be so refreshing to my spirit to be doing this with you all. 2. Two out-of-the-home jobs (one school job and one corporate job), and two in-the-home jobs (wife to Dan and mommy to 20-month-old Anne).

    3. I feel like I have drifted away from God, and from belief even, and it’s partly because (I think) my life has become overwhelmingly busy (not my choice) and I’ve lost any semblance of being centered. I know I probably shouldn’t take this on, but hey, it’s James, and I’ve studied it before so it will be manageable. Really, I’m just looking for some sort of anchor in an otherwise crazy life, and like the 21st-century lady that I am, I’m going to the Internet to find it. 🙂

    1. Shannon Wheeler

I hope you really find the rest and the anchor you are needing in your time with us in the Word. I really am blessed by your honesty, and I’m praying that God will bring the centering and the calm into your life through this. It’s awesome that in the midst of the business, you are making time in the Bible a priority. It’s nice to meet you 🙂

    3. I’m hoping He speaks loud and clear. As in, Joyce-do xyz. I feel like I’ve been a bit aimless since we moved back to the states two years ago. I’m in the empty nest phase of life and hubs and I just had a conversation recently about how we’d like to be ‘doing’. James is the book for that, right?

    Thanks for hosting Marla!

    3. My Bible study group went through James this summer – we just finished James 5 tonight – but we FLEW through it. I’m excited to look at it again more in depth. I’m especially excited to let some of the “social justice” sections (especially in chapters 1, 2, and 5, but I think it’s in all of it) sink in, and to let God speak to me about how I should respond to His Word.

I think we’ve ALL felt like that. Just keep handing over your fears to him on a daily basis and remind yourself how much he loves, loves, loves you. I love you too, Bethy! Miss you!! We still on for the 10th??

You are the lady who always remembers to write thank you notes for every gift you ever receive aren’t you? Me, not so much, much to my mother’s chagrin. BUT, i love that you responded to every comment in an effort to make people feel welcome. That shows quite a bit of diligent graciousness in my book. I’m so thankful that you are hosting this read-along, and I am excited for what God is doing in your family.
