giving away a great book {day 25 of 31}

I loved the book, A Certain Risk: Living Your Faith at the Edge, so much that I’ve already blogged about it not once, but twice this past week. Well, make it an even three! Because guess what?? I have 2 copies to give away, thanks to a super-special generous someone I know (hi, B!).

I could quote the book forever and ever amen, but I don’t want to completely spoil it for y’all, so I’ll just focus on two things: obstacles & gifts.

“Ask God to show you anything at all in your life that is weighing you down, suffocating your freedom, or hindering you from rising into the purposes and plans God has laid out for you.” (197)

“Success is largely redefined when we discover innovative ways to put our skills and talents to work on behalf of God’s own dreams. We all have a measure of gifts, wealth, strengths, skills, and creative talents… How might we activate our own assets to create in response to the opportunities in the world around us?” (202)

Just pick a question to answer in the comments, and click on the rafflecopter thingy to be eligible to win one of 2 copies of the book.

1. What’s in your way of pursuing God’s dreams for your life?

2. What gifts/talents has God given you that could be used for him (even if you don’t see how just yet)?

Thanks, friends! Happy winning!

What’s standing in the way…my selfishness, my lack of faith, and my lack of discipline and focus. I have had many dreams and many have been redirected by God. It’s when I allow Him full access to my heart and life that I can see a great deal of fruit but when I get in the way seems like there’s more chaff than wheat.

What’s getting in my way? Not knowing how or what. . .Maybe that what I have isn’t what people need (like it’s about me at all)? Maybe feeling like I don’t know how to add something else into the delicate balance I’ve created of my life (that, of course, isn’t really balancing all that well anyhow).

What gifts do I have? Mathematical/analytical mind. Love of people. Compassionate heart. Desire to help. Ability to see process weaknesses and improve on/streamline them?

Everyone is answering both questions. . .

I guess my gifts are. . .time, compassion, photography, hair cutting, cooking.

I think it’s really (for lack of a better word) lame that I know what’s getting in my way, yet I still haven’t done anything about it. It’s me. Plain and simple. Me and my fears of being outside of my comfort zone. Me and my insecurity with myself to open up to (of all people) my non-believing husband, and be openly believing. I hate that. I am mad at myself for it, and mad at my husband for not believing. Ok, I’ll stop there as I see this is headed towards more than I was planning to share on a public blog 🙂

    1. My busy-ness and my own agenda get in the way.
    2. My gifts? Cooking dinner, inviting people over to my house, encouraging others, meeting new people

I bought the book (on you’re recommendation) but I haven’t cracked the cover yet. But I love these questions and it’s funny…no It’s God, I’ve been mulling similar questions around recently.

    1. What’s in your way of pursuing God’s dreams for your life? Wrong thinking: I can’t, He can’t, It’s impossible…looks like I’m in the perfect place for God to do something big, Huh?!

    2. What gifts/talents has God given you that could be used for him (even if you don’t see how just yet)? My crazy addiction to running and knack for nutrition knowledge, love of teens/college students, I can cook, I have this wierd super secret desire to do workshops/presentations, I inadvertantly manage to end up in leadership positions(right now I’m school board president??), lastly, I’m ready.

    1. Ohhhhh, Amy, I think you definitely hit the nail on the head for ME! Yep. One of my biggest struggles. And I’m also just recently starting to realize I spend a lot of time seeking after the dream instead of the dream-giver. 🙁
    2. Ummmm, no idea.

  8. Angelyn

    1. What’s getting in my way? Selfishness is the biggest one, laziness and apathy, and holding on with a stranglehold to things that I should be willing to surrender to Him.

  9. Melissa

I think number 2 is the one I’ll answer. I’m not sure yet on number 1. I’m sure it has something to do with myself and my hang ups, but I definitely think that I have the gift of writing and compassion and the gift of encouraging others and I’m not sure yet how those will be used.

  10. Karen

    1. What’s getting in my way? Fear of putting myself out there.

    2. What gifts do I have? Writing, teaching, graphic design and my A-type perfectionist tendencies 🙂

  11. Marla Taviano

I know these are hard questions. I’ll go first.

    1. What’s getting in my way? Some bitterness about my plans not working out my way.

    2. What gifts do I have? Writing, story-telling, time, mad bracelet-making skillz, teaching, compassion.
